Social Studies Update

Students have been participating in a world simulation where they work together to create a country. This simulation gives students problem solving alternatives and invites interaction and creativity. Students continually see similarities between the simulated world they are creating and the real world they are living in. Spies, diplomats, leaders, and citizens function within and among countries until ultimately one country "leads" the world. In the process, balances of power are disturbed and students gain insight into the organization and workings of world governments. Next week, students will present their work to the class and participate in a world peace summit. During the peace summit, students will understand the causes and effects of conflict, the importance of maintaining a peaceful society, and ways they can contribute to a more peaceful and nonviolent society within our school community.
