Math Update - Unit 9

We are currently working on Unit 9 in math class.

Listed below are the concepts and skills taught and assessed in this unit. The Unit 9 Test will be given sometime after the holiday weekend.  Look for updates on our blog!  Have a great weekend!

·         Identify and plot ordered pairs on a 1-quadrant grid and a 4-quadrant grid (positive and negative numbers)
·         Translate (slide) or reflect (flip) a figure on a grid, and name the new points of the figure.
·         Describe a rule for changing figures.
o   Look at Plotting Sailboats on page 301.  Know how to explain the rule for changing points of the original figure to get the new figure.  Look at New Sailboat 3 and know the rule for changing points of the original figure to get the reflected figure.

·         Know the difference between and the meaning of perimeter, area, and volume.  Know your labels!
o   *Height and length is measured in units (cm, mile, inch, yard)  (Think straight line)
o   **Area is measured in units2 (cm2, miles2, inches2, yards2)  (Think of a square)
o   ***Volume is measured in units3 (cm3, miles3, inches3, yards3) (Think of a cube)

·         Find area of a variety of parallelograms and triangles, using whatever method you choose.  Formulas for area will be provided.
o   Journal pages 310, 312, 313, 330.

·         Identify the base (b) and height (h) of triangles and parallelograms.

·         Explain what area of a figure is (not just give the formula for finding it).  Define it.

·         Plot a triangle and/or other shape with a given area.

·         Find the area of a rectangular prism made up of centimeter cubes.
o   Journal page 295 #3, page 307 #2, page 303 #3, page 299 #2, 332 #1.
o   Find the area of the base (B)  and the height of the prism (h) made from centimeter cubes.

·         Find the volume of different prisms (rectangular and non-rectangular bases).
o   Journal pages 322, 324, and 325.

·         Given the volume of a prism, find its height or B (areas of base).

·         Explain how to find the volume of ANY prism (not just give the formula).

·         Check out Page 332 #1, Page 307 #2, Page 303 #3, Page 299 #2, Page 295 #3   Be able to find the area of the base and the height of the prism made from centimeter cubes.
