Summer vacation is a wonderful time of year for students to read books for pleasure and to nurture a love for reading! I recommend that students continue to write and reflect on their readings in a reading journal as often as possible.
Summer Reading Should Be FUN!
- Summer reading is different from reading during the school year. It should be less structured and much more informal.
- Students should choose their own books. Choice in reading helps build motivation and engagement.
- Read aloud to your child and have conversations about the characters and events in a story.
- Make reading a priority this summer, for yourself and your child.
- Encourage your child to write, draw, and talk about what they have read.
- Good readers and writers read and write every day.
Reading is Thinking!
Students have been learning how to think as they read. Asking questions supports learning how to think. Examples of some questions you might ask your child before, during, or after reading might be:
- What was it all about?
- What do you think will happen next?
- Does this make you wonder about anything?
- What did you learn?
- How did the characters change over time?
- What was the problem in the story?
- What was the solution?
- What was your favorite part of the story? Why?
- If you could be friends with a character in the story, who would it be? Why?
I hope that you and your family have a wonderful time enjoying many great books this vacation!
