Math groups have started!
What are math groups?
They are flexible groups that allow us to try to best meet students’ needs, most effectively use our teacher resources, and recognize student strengths in different areas of math. We regroup the whole fourth grade before each unit using pretests, MAP tests, and teacher observations. Students stay with the same group throughout an entire unit and teachers adapt instructional strategies to meet the students’ needs during that unit. The process is repeated and groups are remade for the next unit.
Quotes from previous students about flexible grouping:
"Fourth grade math is nice because I like to think hard and that's what it makes me do."
"The moving of classes was fun because we got to know each other."
"My teacher's giving math at my level."
"Fourth grade math is median because some things are easy and some are hard." :)
How can you support your child at home?
1. Check out the Family Letter that comes home at the beginning of each unit. It has concepts for the new unit that will help you make connections at home.
2. Encourage your child to use Mathletics and EveryDay Math Online. Our math program reinforces skills and concepts through activities and games, and these online programs are a perfect extension of that! These will sometimes be assigned as homework, too. Your child’s login should be located in their agenda, in case they’ve forgotten!
3. Go to the Fourth Grade Resource Site! We’ve organized our math resources by unit to make things easy for students to access. There are videos, songs, games, and reteaching sites to help answer questions that might come up and provide extra practice
