We will start with Unit 1 in math. Unit 1 builds on students' understanding of factors and products to explore such topics as prime and composite numbers, square numbers, and the square roots of square numbers. The objectives for the week are: Acquaint students with the content and organization of their math book, review rectangular arrays, and to find factor pairs for a number. Next week students will learn to classify prime and composite numbers and be introduced to square numbers and the exponent key on the calculator.
This week students will receive logins for Everyday Math online where they will have access to the student reference book online, study links, and other helpful online tools. Students will also receive their Mathletics login, a great online tool to practice the concepts and skills being presented in class.
We will also work with The Khan Academy during this school year. Students will learn how to login this week. Throughout the year, they will receive recommendations from their teacher on specific tasks to work on connected to our math curriculum. However, students may begin working on the 5th grade mission right away! It would be great to see the entire grade level complete the mission this year.
Please feel free to access the unit online at the Everyday Math website. Here you can find links to the study links to provide extra practice at home on the concepts being presented in class.
We are very excited to begin our year together!
